The Nuffield School for the deaf & blind in Kaithady, Jaffna, stands as one of Sri Lanka’s most important institutions dedicated to the education and care of children with hearing and visual impairments. Established in 1956, the school was founded to provide specialized education to children from the northern and eastern regions of the country who previously had very limited access to formal schooling. It began with 18 students and four members of staff, marking the start of a mission to ensure that children with disabilities would have the opportunity to learn, develop skills, and participate fully in society
The school forms part of the Ceylon School for the deaf and blind, an educational and charitable organization governed by the Diocese of Colombo of the Anglican Church and managed by a board of trustees. This network operates several residential schools in Sri Lanka, including institutions for the deaf and blind in Ratmalana and the Nuffield School in Jaffna, reflecting a long tradition of providing free education and vocational training to children with sensory disabilities.
From its earliest years, the Nuffield School was established to meet a crucial social need. In earlier generations, children with hearing or visual impairments were often excluded from mainstream education and opportunities for employment. The school was therefore created not only as a place of learning but also as a supportive community where students could gain confidence, independence, and practical skills.
Over the decades, the institution has grown significantly. Today, the school serves over one hundred students, many of whom reside on campus, and provides education from the nursery level up to the GCE Ordinary Level in the Tamil medium. In addition to academic studies, students receive vocational training in areas such as carpentry, tailoring, typing, metalwork, beauty culture, and agriculture—skills that help them lead independent and productive lives after leaving school.
The school has endured many challenges, particularly during the decades of conflict in the northern province. Despite disruptions and limited resources, it has continued to operate and provide a safe and nurturing environment for children with special needs. Through the dedication of its staff, trustees, and supporters, the Nuffield School has remained a vital educational center for the deaf and visually impaired communities of northern Sri Lanka.
Today, the Nuffield School for the deaf & blind continues its mission of education, care, and empowerment, helping generations of children overcome barriers and build meaningful futures. Its legacy reflects a commitment to inclusion, dignity, and the belief that every child—regardless of disability—deserves the opportunity to learn and thrive.
