Have you ever taken the time to think of how dependent you are on sensory information? You don’t need to look too far. Think of the time you woke up in the middle of the night and thumped your foot against the bedroom table as you tried to make your way to the washroom. Or that time you played ‘pin the tail on the elephant’ or ‘Kana Mutti’ during Avurudhu. Or that time you couldn’t taste your lunch during a really bad flu season. Or even that time your ears got blocked because you dove too deep too fast after swimming practice! The ability to see the changing colours of a traffic light, to enjoy your favourite music, and to admire the beauty of the universe is something we have become accustomed to since the day we first opened our eyes. But the thing is, some of us just don’t. We don’t open our eyes. We don’t ever hear the words ‘I love you.’ We don’t get to see the sun rise or set. We don’t get to hear the number 1 hit of the season.
ඔබ සංවේදී තොරතුරු මත රඳා පවතින ආකාරය ගැන සිතීමට ඔබ කවදා හෝ කාලය ගෙන තිබේද? ඔබට අවශ්ය නැත දුර බලන්න. ඔබ මධ්යම රාත්රියේ අවදි වී ඔබේ පාදයට පහර දුන් කාලය ගැන සිතන්න ඔබ වැසිකිළියට යාමට උත්සාහ කරන විට නිදන කාමර මේසය. නැත්තම් ඒ වෙලාවේ ඔයා වාදනය කළේ ‘පින් ද ටේල් ඔන් ද’ කියලා අලියා හෝ ‘කනා මුට්ටි’ අවුරුදු කාලෙට. එසේත් නැතිනම් එම කාලය නරක කාලයකදී ඔබට ඔබේ දිවා ආහාරය රස විඳීමට නොහැකි විය උණ සමය. එසේත් නැතිනම් ඔබ පිහිනීමෙන් පසු ඉතා වේගයෙන් ගැඹුරට පරෙවියා ගිය නිසා ඔබේ කන් අවහිර වී ඇත පුහුණු වන්න! රථවාහන ආලෝකයක වෙනස්වන වර්ණ දැකීමට, ඔබේ ප්රියතම සංගීතය රස විඳීමට, සහ කිරීමට ඇති හැකියාව විශ්වයේ සුන්දරත්වය අගය කිරීම අප මුලින්ම විවෘත කළ දිනයේ සිටම අපට හුරුපුරුදු දෙයකි අපේ ඇස්. නමුත් කාරණය නම්, අපගෙන් සමහරක් එසේ නොවේ. අපි ඇස් අරින්නේ නැහැ. ‘මම ආදරෙයි’ කියන වචන අපිට කවදාවත් ඇහෙන්නේ නැහැ ඔබ.’ අපිට ඉර පායනවා හෝ බැස යනවා දකින්න ලැබෙන්නේ නැහැ. වාරයේ අංක 1 පහර අපට අසන්නට නොලැබේ.

But this is not a story about the helpless and deprived. Not at all. This is an account of a great institution, one that took up the challenge to make bricks when there was absolutely no straw to be found!
හැබැයි මේක අසරණ, අසරණ මිනිස්සු ගැන කතාවක් නෙවෙයි. කොහෙත්ම නැහැ. මෙය විශිෂ්ට ආයතනයක ගිණුමකි, පිදුරු සොයා ගැනීමට කිසිසේත්ම නොහැකි වූ විට ගඩොල් සෑදීමේ අභියෝගය භාර ගත් එකක්!
ஆனால் இது ஆதரவற்றோரைப் பற்றிய கதையல்ல. இல்லவே இல்லை. இது ஒரு பெரிய நிறுவனத்தின் கணக்கு, வைக்கோல் எதுவும் கிடைக்காதபோது செங்கற்களை உருவாக்கும் சவாலை ஏற்றுக்கொண்ட ஒன்று!
The School for the Deaf and Blind in Ratmalana was inaugurated in 1912 by Miss Mary F. Chapman of the Church of England Zenana Missionary Society (C.E.Z.M.S.) to address the needs of a neglected and marginalised population consisting of both hearing and sight impaired children. The schools, that began in a rented house down Station Road in Dehiwala with just 1 day scholar and 2 boarders (who arrived on the 6th of November) and 4 members of staff (Miss M. Chapman — Foundress, Miss Lilian Menage — trained nurse who acted as House Mother, Miss K. Mase — Trained teacher of the Deaf, and Miss E. G. Bausor — trained teacher of the Blind), has grown to house over 225 students, 80% of whom are full-term boarders, and consists of an academic, administrative and support staff of over 100.
රත්මලාන බිහිරි සහ අන්ධයන් සඳහා වූ පාසල 1912 වසරේ මේරි එෆ්. චැප්මන් මෙනවිය විසින් ආරම්භ කරන ලදී. එංගලන්තයේ පල්ලියේ Zenana මිෂනාරි සංගමය (C.E.Z.M.S.) නොසලකා හරින ලද සහ නොසලකා හරින ලද අයගේ අවශ්යතා සපුරාලීම සඳහා ශ්රවණාබාධිත සහ පෙනීමේ ආබාධ සහිත දරුවන්ගෙන් සමන්විත ආන්තික ජනගහනය. ආරම්භ වූ පාසල්, a දෙහිවල ස්ටේෂන් පාරේ කුලියට ගත් නිවස දින 1 ක විද්වත් සහ බෝඩිංකරුවන් දෙදෙනෙකු සමඟ (6 වෙනිදා පැමිණි නොවැම්බර්) සහ කාර්ය මණ්ඩලයේ 4 දෙනෙක් (M. Chapman මෙනවිය – නිර්මාතෘ, ලිලියන් මෙනේජ් මෙනවිය – පුහුණු කර ඇත ගෘහ මව ලෙස ක්රියා කළ හෙදිය, K. Mase මෙනවිය – බිහිරි පුහුණු ගුරුවරිය සහ E. G. Bausor මෙනවිය – අන්ධයන්ගේ පුහුණු ගුරුවරයා), සිසුන් 225 කට වැඩි සංඛ්යාවක් සඳහා වැඩී ඇත, ඔවුන්ගෙන් 80% ක් පූර්ණ කාලීන නේවාසිකයින් වේ, සහ 100 කට අධික අධ්යයන, පරිපාලන සහ සහායක කාර්ය මණ්ඩලයකින් සමන්විත වේ.

The school shifted quite a bit during its initial years. From its original location in Dehiwala in 1912, the school moved to what was supposed to be it’s permanent premises — a gifted plot of land by Mr. A.J.R. de Soysa (6 acres) at Kandawala, Ratmalana in July, 1914. However, due to adverse conditions, the school was once again transferred temporarily to a house in Colpetty known as ‘Icicle Hall’ (later known as Sri Kotha located next to ‘Rheinland’ house owned by the celebrated sportsman Mr. E.L.F. de Soysa) for 9 months until the Ratmalana land was made suitable for living-in — a venture achieved only in October, 1915. By the generosity extended from the Beven Family of Veyangoda, a beautiful Chapel — The Chapel of the Holy Child, was erected at the school on the 18th of June, 1922. Another wonderful gift of land, this time by Mr. N.D.H. Abdul Caffoor, was given in 1926 when he donated the adjoining property of 4 acres to the Ratmalana school. Just as the school was settling in, the outbreak of World War II, specifically the bombing of Pearl Harbour, forced another move. Due to the schools close proximity to the Ratmalana Airport and Railway compounds, the school was given less than 24 hours to vacate the premises (on 22/02/1942) and, as a result, on the 23rd of February, 1942, the abandoned railway stations at Yatiyantota, Karawanella and Dehiowita were occupied by the school.
The adult girls were moved to the Girls Industrial Department at a spacious two storeyed house on Flower Road known as ‘Broomhill’ on the 22nd of July, 1936, and the adult boys to the Mens Industrial Department at a land close to the C.M.S. Kotte School in Kahatagahawatta on the 10th of October, 1937. The move proved to be an exceptional one and, soon, the industrial departments were supplying all the clothes necessary for both the deaf and blind students, and were also knitting stockings for the police force in Ceylon!

How Can You Help?
- By taking an interest in the School and in the whole process of the deaf and blind
- By promoting the school and seeking out deaf and blind students who may not be engaged or receiving the best possible education as offered here
- By offering to teach out-of-school activities to help the children occupy their leisure hours more productively
- By giving special material which the school needs but cannot afford: e.g Braille Writers, Arithmetic Boards, Paint for buildings, etc.
- By giving regularly to the general fund and/or meal fund of the Ceylon School for the Deaf and Blind, and by promoting and enrolling in the Birthday Scheme — offering a gift of a meal for the students of the deaf and blind school as a thank-offering for the blessings received.
- By involving your organisation or school in contributing towards the deaf and blind children on a regular basis
- By participating at the Sunday chapel services at 4:30pm
