The Continuing Need for School

Modern thinking advocates the integration of sensory impaired children at an early age by enrolling them in mainstream schools. This concept cannot be fully implemented in Sri Lanka until the mainstream schools have the resources and the expertise necessary for the education of children with a sensory impairments. At present, especially in rural areas, the essentials for the education of sensory impaired children are not well established. However, our schools support integration, and whenever a student can return to mainstream education the staff do everything to support the transition.

The teaching of sensory impaired children requires a high ratio of teachers to students, much higher than other schools in Sri Lanka. As an Institute specializing in this field we do employ a large number of specially trained teachers, we also have a high ratio of graduate teachers. This way we hope to give a head start to our students by giving them an education equal to or better than their counterparts. Apart from education we endeavor, to teach them the necessary skills to help the students overcome their sensory loss, as well as teach them marketable vocational skills, thereby enabling them to be in a better position to compete in society once they leave school.
